Shepherd’s
Staff Covenant
Know that the LORD is God! It is he that made us,
and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Psalm 100:3
1. A Psalm of David.
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want; he makes me lie down in green
pastures. He leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me
in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through
the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy
rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the
presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I
shall dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Psalm 23
2.
“Rather than loving myself most, I am willing to love God best and others
more than myself. This love is an act of will. The moment I do something
definite either for God or others that costs me something, I have expressed
love and have started through the gate being led into one of God’s green
pastures.” i
3. I recognize that Jesus Christ is the original “Good Shepherd” and I
covenant with Him to honor His principles and teachings to love and support
those members of His flock for whom I am granted the privilege of guiding.
4.
Nothing quiets and reassures sheep as to see the shepherd in the field.
Therefore, I covenant with the “Good Shepherd” to make my presence known to
the sheep of my flock. I will contact them at least monthly and remind them
that the Lord is with them always. I will be a friend; I will listen more
than talk. Confidentiality will be assured.
5.
All of God’s children form the body of God’s Church. With Jesus as the head,
I, as a representative of the Shepherd’s Staff, covenant with Him to perform
the functions of His arms and legs. As appendages under the direction of the
‘Good Shepherd’ I will communicate with my flock to discern whether Edgerton
United Methodist Church is doing all it can to meet their spiritual needs;
and help to meet their physical and emotional needs as well.
6. I thank God that Edgerton United Methodist Church is such an active
church and I pledge to keep my flock informed of mission and ministry
opportunities that will help them to grow in their relationship with our
Lord and Savior.
Make me to know
thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me,
for thou art the God of my salvation; for thee I wait all the day long.
